Papenburg

Parkstadion Obenende holds four thousand people on the edge of Papenburg. Blau-Weiß 94 has never needed more: promotion to the Oberliga Niedersachsen in 2022 was the high point of its recent run, and the club settled back into the Landesliga Weser-Ems.

The name itself dates only to 1994, when Germania Papenburg and Amisia Papenburg merged into one club. Germania traced its own line back to 1908, when it began as a schoolboys' football club, and had reached the Amateuroberliga in the 1960s before winning the Verbandsliga West in 1971. Amisia spent the late 1960s and 1970s in the same Verbandsliga West. The merger was not universally welcomed: opponents on the Germania side broke away and formed FC Germania 95 Papenburg rather than join the new blue-and-white club.

In cup football Blau-Weiß 94 has had its moments against stronger opposition, reaching the round of 16 in the Niedersachsenpokal in the 2022/23 season before going out on penalties to Lüneburger SK Hansa.

None of that history changes what the club is week to week: a Landesliga side playing in front of a few thousand people at Obenende, in a town where football still carries the memory of two older clubs joined into one.
