Sport Belém traces itself back to a meeting at the officers' casino of the Brazilian Air Force on 2 December 1965, and it took until 1967 for the club to actually field a football department.

The high point came early and stayed unrepeated: runner-up in the 1973 Campeonato Paraense, beaten in the final by Remo, a placing the club has never bettered in the state's top flight since. Two campaigns in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B, in 1971 and 1986, brought little beyond the experience of playing nationally — 20th of 23 teams the first time, 31st of 36 the second. The only trophy in the cabinet is the 2008 Campeonato Paraense Segunda Divisão, won against Time Negra, which sent the Dragão back up to the state elite for 2009.

Since then the club has slid back down the state pyramid and now works its way through the lower divisions rather than against Paysandu, the old rival with whom it shares no derby name of its own, the way Remo and Paysandu have their Re-Pa.
