The Swiss Football Association runs its national teams out of Muri bei Bern, out of a building it calls the Haus des Schweizer Fussballs on the Worbstrasse. Home games move around the country instead — Brügglifeld in Aarau one window, the Tissot Arena in Biel/Bienne or the Stade de Suisse in Bern the next.

That federation set the side up in 1990, and it opened with a 2–1 win away to Greece on Rhodes. Its best finish came two decades later, in 2011, when it reached the final of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship and lost 0–2 to Spain in Denmark. In 2002, as co-host alongside Italy, it went out to the same opponent on penalties after a scoreless semi-final. Spain again ended the run in 2023, this time in the quarter-finals.

What the side is mostly asked to do, though, is hand players upward. Alexander Frei went from the U21 shirt to a Borussia Dortmund and Basel career. Not every graduate stayed Swiss on paper: Zdravko Kuzmanović played his age-group football here before switching to represent Serbia. The current generation has kept the pipeline going — Zeki Amdouni went on to Aston Villa, Ardon Jashari to Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The players wear red at home and white away, off the national flag, and go by the nickname Nati. Patrick Rahmen has coached them since July 2022. The team's own record against Spain across three tournament exits reads 0–2, 0–0 on penalties, and 0–1.
