Turkey's under-19 side reached the final of the 1992 UEFA European Under-18 Championship and beat Portugal 2-1 to take the title, then went back a year later and lost the final to England, 1-0. A third final followed in 2004, this time at under-19 level, where Spain shut them out 1-0.

The team traces back to a first fixture on 25 April 1999, a 2-0 win over Slovakia. Between the two European finals and that fixture ran a generation of players sent up from the youth ranks before their names meant anything to a wider public. Arda Turan came through between 2004 and 2006, seventeen caps; Hakan Çalhanoğlu followed between 2011 and 2013, and Nuri Şahin's run at this level, six caps across 2004 and 2005, overlapped with the very squad that fell to Spain in that year's final.

Fixtures against Greece carry weight beyond the scoreline, the history between the two countries feeding into meetings played as recently as 2019 and 2023. There is no separate nickname for the age group; it travels under the senior team's own, Tea Stars.

Training runs through the TFF Riva Facility, out at Riva in Beykoz, on the Istanbul side of the Bosphorus. It is a working camp rather than a matchday venue, one pitch fitted with 100 seats and three more holding fifty apiece, built for a squad to prepare rather than for a crowd to watch.
