The 1984 shootout bracketed titles in 1953 and 1960 — the first won 2–0 against Yugoslavia in the FIFA Youth Tournament final, the second taken 2–1 past Romania.

Hungary play home qualifiers at the Alcufer Stadion in Gyirmót, a 4,500-seat ground also known as the Ménfői úti Stadion, with the squad based day to day at the federation's training centre in Telki. The side carries the nickname The Magyars , the same one used by the senior national team.

The setup answers to the Hungarian Football Federation, formed on 19 January 1901, and it is that federation's founding date the under-19 side traces itself back to rather than any separate year of its own.
