The programme traces back to 1948, when France first entered international youth competition, and it has produced a run of champions that few countries can match: eight titles at the UEFA European Under-19 Championship, most recently in 2016.

That 2016 side is remembered for Kylian Mbappé, who scored seven goals in eleven appearances, and the tournament's Golden Player award that year went to his teammate Jean-Kévin Augustin. The same prize had gone to Gaël Kakuta in 2010 and Abdoulaye Baldé in 2005, a run that says something about how consistently the age group has thrown up standout individuals rather than just strong teams. More recently Désiré Doué came through the ranks, scoring three goals in twelve caps, alongside Michael Olise.

The squad trains at the Institut national du football in Clairefontaine-en-Yvelines, opened by François Mitterrand in June 1988 on land that stretches to 56 hectares. Outside the European championship, the team added the Mediterranean Games title in 2022.

What the record does not show is a Under-19 European crown since 2016. France reached the final again in 2024 and lost, but did not concede either.
