England is the fixture that matters most for Wales U19, with Scotland U19 completing the domestic rivalry.

The 2026 European Under-19 Championship gave the team something it had never had before: a place in the finals as hosts. It did not go well. Wales finished bottom of Group A without a point, without a goal, and conceded 14 — the worst goal difference recorded in the tournament's history. Before that, the closest the side had come was the Elite Round, reached for the first time in 2019 and repeated in 2020.

What the age group has produced instead is players, not trophies. Gareth Bale came through these ranks, as did Joe Allen and, more recently, Ben Woodburn, Harry Wilson, Daniel James, Neco Williams and Ethan Ampadu.

The team shares that nickname, Young Dragons, with the senior side, and plays in the same red shirts and white shorts. Qualifiers and friendlies are staged at Cardiff City Stadium.

It began on 15 April 1948, in London, with a 4–0 defeat to Northern Ireland — a first match that doubled as Wales's entry into the inaugural FIFA Youth Tournament, the competition that would later become the European Under-19 Championship.
