The association itself has been headquartered in Vienna since 1904, and the team has no ground of its own. It plays around the country, and its main base is the Wiener Neustadt Arena, a 4,000-seat stadium beside the ÖFB Center, where it also trains.

In 2003 Austria lost the semi-final to Portugal 6-3 after extra time. In 2006 they lost to Spain 5-0. In 2014 they lost to Germany. Austria have reached the final tournament eight times since the competition was rebranded in 2002, most recently in 2022, and have never won it. The 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup went further than any European run: the side finished fourth.

David Alaba, Marko Arnautović, Marcel Sabitzer and Konrad Laimer all wore the shirt at this level.

Andreas Heraf coached the team in two spells, 2009–10 and 2013–14. The second ended with the 2014 semi-final. Peter Schöttel later held the job, and Martin Scherb took over from him. He leads the side in the 2025/26 season. Austria last reached a final tournament in 2022.
