Alexander Isak's international career at this level ran to six caps and two goals across 2016 and 2017, before Liverpool FC signed a player Sweden's youth setup had already flagged. Since the competition took its current U19 format in 2002, Sweden have not once reached the finals, a run that includes finishing third in their qualifying group in November 2019 after beating Estonia 4–0 in Sandviken and losing to Ukraine 1–2, results that summed to elimination rather than progress.

The side has no ground to call its own. It has played qualifying fixtures at Friends Arena in Solna and at 3Arena in Stockholm, borrowing space rather than owning it, which is ordinary enough for an age-group team but leaves the Swedish Football Association, headquartered in the same city, still planning a dedicated training centre at Kungsängen in Upplands-Bro that has yet to open.

Andreas Pettersson took over as head coach in January 2023, arriving with six years already spent as assistant on the U21 side, including the campaign that won Sweden the European Under-21 Championship in 2015. He replaced a coaching lineage that ran back through Roger Franzén, who had charge of the U19s in 2007. Pettersson's first results were not kind: a 0–1 loss to Portugal U19 in Malta in March 2023, in an Elite Round qualifier that again left Sweden short of the finals.
