TuS Rot-Weiß Koblenz

The French occupation authorities objected to one word. In 1947 three Koblenz clubs merged, and the officials would not allow "Turnen", the German term for gymnastics, in the new name. The club therefore started life as Sportfreunde Rot-Weiß Koblenz. One of the three founders, Koblenzer TSC, dated from 1860.

The multi-sport side gave the club more than a name. Its men's field fistball team won German titles in 1989, 1991 and 2003, and the athletics section had national champions in the 1940s and 1950s, among them the hurdler Bert Steines. In July 2021 the football department left the association and became FC Rot-Weiß Koblenz.

For most of its history the football side lived in the shadow of TuS Koblenz, the other club in the city. After TuS Koblenz went down, the temporary stands at Stadion Oberwerth came out and capacity fell from 15,000 to 9,500. Rot-Weiß moved off the adjacent synthetic pitch, the Rot-Weiß-Platz, into the main ground that July. In August 2018 they beat their neighbours 4-1 in the Koblenz city derby.

The Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz/Saar title followed in 2019 and took the club into the fourth-tier Regionalliga Südwest. The first season ended with them bottom, but the season was abandoned because of the pandemic and nobody went down. They stayed three years and were relegated in 2023.

Jan Hawel is the name that links the two clubs. He had played for TuS Koblenz in the 2. Bundesliga, and he later scored 19 goals in 65 appearances for Rot-Weiß.
