Hertingfordbury Park

Hertford Town moved here in 1908 after absorbing Blue Cross. What you see now is a patchwork of different eras. The main stand, a modest concrete structure with a roof, dates back to 1959, replacing a wooden terrace that burned down during the Second World War. It is a sturdy, unpretentious block of seating for about 200 fans, while the rest are left to stand on terracing that has seen better decades.

The surface is the most modern feature, a bright green 3G artificial turf laid in 2021 by Velocity Sports. It plays true even under the floodlights installed in 1956, though the light poles look thin against the vastness of the evening sky. This is a non-league ground in the truest sense: it does not pretend to be anything more. The capacity is listed at 6,500, but the number feels generous when you stand beside the touchline. The highest crowd here was 5,000 back in 1956 for an FA Amateur Cup tie against Kingstonian, and since then the players have not played on a bigger stage.

It is not a destination for football fans looking for atmosphere in the traditional sense. There is no song, no noise, just the sound of the ball hitting the turf. But it is honest. It is a place where a team can play the second half a man up without the pressure of a million eyes. The clubhouse was rebuilt after a fire in 1992, so the safety of the players is better looked after now than it was then. That is the only progress that matters here.
