The Nationals beat the Tigers 4:2 in a regular-season MLB match on September 23rd. It was a straightforward result on paper, though the margin didn't tell the whole story. Both teams have been trading wins and losses in their recent meetings, and this one followed that pattern with a twist.
We had given the Tigers the edge in our forecast, 52 per cent confidence for a home win. By then the numbers looked solid enough, but the match had other ideas. To be fair, the Nationals found their rhythm when it mattered, and that is often enough to turn a prediction.
The two sides have been alternating results all week. The Tigers took two from the Nationals on September 21st and 22nd, only for the visitors to respond here. And here's the thing about these brief series — momentum shifts faster than anyone expects, and today it went the other way.
A loss drops the Tigers further down the standings while the Nationals claw their way back into contention. Four runs to two is not a blowout, but it is enough when you are fighting for position. They kept their heads after conceding an early run, and that discipline showed through.
The Tigers had chances but could not convert them when it counted. The Nationals scored when they needed to and held on grimly after that. Sometimes a match is decided in three or four moments rather than ninety minutes of grinding. That was the case here.
