Flooding Postpones Yankees-Orioles Game
Severe flooding from an overnight storm forced the postponement of the Yankees-Orioles game at Yankee Stadium, with no make-up date set yet.
Flooding shut down the Yankees' home schedule on 28 September. The storm that hit New York and New Jersey overnight forced the postponement of the game against the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium, the 46,537-seat ground the club has used since 1923 and built its long history around.
CBS News reported that residents in coastal parts of New York and New Jersey took to kayaks and canoes to move through their own neighbourhoods, paddling past cars left partly or almost fully submerged.
"In coastal areas of New York and New Jersey, the storm caused flooding so severe that residents travelled through their neighbourhoods by kayak and canoe, past parked cars that were partially or almost completely submerged," the broadcaster said.
The storm also cut power. PowerOutage put the number of homes and businesses without electricity early on 28 September at around 21,000, spread across New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts.
The New York Post reported a death linked to the same weather system two days earlier: a 56-year-old man was struck by a falling tree in New York on 26 September, suffered multiple injuries and died in hospital.
No date has been given for a Yankees-Orioles make-up game, and any rescheduling will depend on how quickly floodwater clears from the city and around the ballpark.
