Walter Jhonnier Chalá Rosales

Long before Barcelona SC put a shirt on his back, Walter Chalá was learning the game on the streets of Valle del Chota and at the Agustín Delgado football school, before Deportivo Cuenca took him into its academy at 14. He made his professional debut for the club in July 2010, and within months a $1 million move to FC Rubin Kazan followed — a transfer that briefly made him one of the more notable Ecuadorian exports to Russian football. It did not work out on the pitch: injury kept him out of every league appearance for Rubin's first team, and he was sent back to Cuenca on loan, then on to FC Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk, where he did get minutes, 32 appearances and three goals across two seasons. He still picked up a Russian Cup winner's medal with Rubin Kazan in 2011–12 as a registered squad member, despite playing no part in the run itself. His most productive scoring spell came back home. Returning to Deportivo Cuenca in December 2015, he scored 14 goals in the 2016 season, an unusual return for a defender. A move to Barcelona SC in 2017 brought only a single appearance, and he found more consistent football afterwards at Universidad Católica, where he spent four seasons and made over a hundred league appearances. A brief stint at LDU Quito in 2023 was part of the squad that won both the Copa Sudamericana and the Ecuadorian Serie A title that year. At international level, Chalá was capped twice by Ecuador in 2021, debuting in a friendly win over Bolivia in March and scoring his only goal for the national side against Mexico that October.
