About
Altitude and distance shape this tournament as much as any rule in its statutes: home advantage in South America's premier continental club competition owes something to stadiums thousands of metres up and to travel across a continent. That, along with its historical role in the Intercontinental Cup and a qualification structure that admits the defending champion automatically, sets it apart from the UEFA Champions League.
Forty-seven clubs from the ten CONMEBOL member associations take part. Brazil holds seven berths and Argentina six; the other eight nations have four each. Lower-ranked entrants begin in preliminary knockout rounds, which feed a group stage of 32 teams in eight groups of four, played home and away. The top two in each group reach the round of 16, and the knockout ties from there are decided over two legs — except the final, a single match at a neutral venue. The away goals rule was reintroduced in 2005 and applied until recent years.
Independiente leads the roll of honour with seven titles, ahead of Boca Juniors on six and Peñarol on five. Flamengo are the holders, having beaten Palmeiras 1–0 in the 2025 final in Lima; their other titles came in 1981, 2019 and 2022.
The competition sits directly above the Copa Sudamericana, and the two are linked in both directions: Sudamericana winners and runners-up qualify for the following Libertadores, while clubs eliminated here often transfer into the Sudamericana. Founded as the Copa de Campeones de América, it was renamed in 1965 for the heroes of South American independence. Entry widened to runners-up in 1966 and expanded again in 2017. Mexican clubs competed from 1998 to 2016.
