The men who put the club together sold beer. Richard Bentín Mujica and his wife, Esther Grande de Bentín, held shares in the Backus and Johnston brewery, and in December 1955 they turned a side named Sporting Tobago into something with their product's name on it: Sporting Cristal . So did the sky blue and white.

Winning began almost at once. The first Peruvian championship arrived in 1956, the second in 1961, and from there the titles came in runs rather than singly: five in a row through the mid-1960s, then a stretch from 1979 to the end of the 1990s in which Cristal were champions more often than not. Twenty league titles in total. The most recent came in 2020.

The one that got away is the 1997 Copa Libertadores. Cristal reached the final and lost it.

Home is the Estadio Alberto Gallardo in the Rímac district, open since 1961 and, in its way, a record of changing safety rules: it once held 21,000 and now takes 11,600.

Rímac sits across the river from the centre, which puts Cristal within a short journey of both the clubs they measure themselves against. Universitario de Deportes and Alianza Lima are the other two of the capital's big three, and the matches between them are the clásicos. Alianza's ground is in La Victoria, Universitario's out in Ate.
