The Primera División, currently branded as Liga 1, operates as the top tier of the Peruvian football pyramid. Founded in 1912 by clubs from Lima and Callao, it transitioned to a professional structure in 1951 and expanded its reach across the country in 1966. The competition distinguishes itself through a unique seasonal format that runs over two short tournaments, Torneo Apertura and Torneo Clausura, before concluding with playoffs to determine the champion. This structure contrasts with standard single-season leagues, requiring clubs to perform consistently across distinct phases.
Relegation and promotion mechanics involve three teams dropping to Liga 2, while two teams ascend from the second tier. A significant change in 2023 altered the pathway for the Copa Perú winner, who now enters Liga 2 rather than the top flight. This adjustment separates the elite professional league from the massive amateur and semi-professional tournament that feeds the pyramid. Universitario de Deportes holds the record for the most titles with 29, followed by Alianza Lima with 25 and Sporting Cristal with 20. Universitario secured the most recent crown in 2024, winning both internal tournaments, while Alianza Lima claimed the title in 2023.
The current season features eighteen clubs, including ADT, Alianza Atlético, Cienciano, and Comerciantes Unidos. The league maintains commercial partnerships with sponsors such as Movistar and Betsson. The format ensures a clear hierarchy between the professional elite and the broader amateur structure, defining the competitive landscape of Peruvian football. The distinction lies in the professional status and the specific tournament phases that culminate in the national championship.
