It commemorates three students of the Colegio San Ramón de Cajamarca who were killed at the Battle of San Pablo during the War of the Pacific — schoolboys from the town, remembered on the ground where the town now watches its football.
That year was 1942, and the club grew out of the Cajamarca university whose initials it still wears.
