No fixture yet defines FC Cajamarca the way UTC does. Universidad Técnica de Cajamarca has held the city since 1964, plays its own matches at Estadio Héroes de San Ramón, and gives the newer club its nearest thing to a local rival simply by sharing the ground — two tenants, one pitch, no shared history to speak of. FC Cajamarca has none of that inheritance. It was formed on 5 January 2023, entered regional football at the bottom, and set about winning its way past UTC's seniority rather than arguing with it.

The route up went through every rung available. The club took the Liga Distrital de Cajamarca and the Liga Provincial de Cajamarca in its first year, added the Liga Departamental in 2024, then reached the final of the Copa Perú that same year, losing to Bentín Tacna Heroica on penalties, 3-4. The runner-up spot still carried a place in Liga 2, Peru's second tier, and that was the opening the club needed. In 2025, three years after forming, FC Cajamarca won Liga 2 outright, beating Deportivo Moquegua 3-2 on aggregate in the final, and with it a place in Liga 1 for 2026 — top-flight football for a club that had not existed at the start of the decade.

Home matches are played at Estadio Héroes de San Ramón, known locally as El Coloso Local, which holds around 18,450. The club takes the field in blue and gold, colours that give it its nickname, Azul y Oro. It began, in January 2023, as a district-level side with no ground of its own reputation to lean on.
