The mining camps of Parcoy, high in the Pataz province of La Libertad, gave the club its shape and its nickname: Los Mineros. It grew out of district and provincial football, taking the Liga Provincial de Pataz for the first time in 2013.

Everything turned in 2019. Deportivo Llacuabamba reached the Finalísima of the Copa Perú and finished top of the final stage, only for Carlos Stein to lodge a complaint over the registration of Milton Bermejo. The federation ruled against Llacuabamba and handed the title to Carlos Stein. Second place still carried a prize: entry to the Cuadrangular de Ascenso, which the club won, and with it promotion to the first division.

The 2020 debut season was played in Huamachuco, because the home ground could not be licensed for the top flight. José Bustamante scored the club's first goal in Liga 1. Néstor Clausen took charge that year. The season ended with Llacuabamba twentieth of twenty and relegated to Liga 2.

What the year did produce was a market.

Roberto Tristán is the name attached to the climb itself — the coach who took a side from the district leagues of Parcoy through the Copa Perú and out the other end within a single calendar year.

The Estadio Municipal de Huamachuco holds 5,000. The ground the club actually comes from holds 500.
