A university put a football team into the top flight without waiting for it to climb there. The Universidad de San Martín de Porres, itself set up in 1962, founded the club on 21 January 2004 and bought the licence of Sport Coopsol to take its place in the Peruvian Primera División.
The winning came quickly. Víctor Rivera took the title in 2007 and again in 2008, and in 2010, with Aníbal Ruiz in charge, San Martín beat León de Huánuco in the final for a third championship in four seasons. The Copa Inca run of 2014 ended against Alianza Lima on penalties.
Home is the Estadio Alberto Gallardo in the Rímac district, shared with Sporting Cristal. The 11,600 capacity is what remains after safety legislation cut the older figure back.
Relegation to Liga 2 came at the end of the 2022 season, the first time the club had been anywhere but the top division.
What San Martín is best known for is not the three titles but the players who passed through on the way to the national side. Yoshimar Yotún came out of the club in its title-winning years; Christian Ramos and Paolo Hurtado followed similar routes.
