The 2025 season put César Vallejo back in Liga 2, the division the club last won in 2018, and it began that campaign in a ground built for 2,000 people. The move down from the top flight, where the team had played every year from 2004 to 2024, came with a change of address as well as of category.

The club exists because a university wanted a football team. It was set up in January 1996 as a sporting arm of Universidad César Vallejo, on the initiative of the university's founder, Cesar Acuña Peralta, and the players were nicknamed Los Poetas. Promotion out of the amateur pyramid ran through the regional leagues of La Libertad before the Copa Perú title of 2003 opened the door to the first division.

The best thing the club has won since is the Torneo del Inca of 2015, decided in a final against Alianza Lima; Mauricio Montes scored one of the goals that day. Third place in the national championship came three times, in 2012, 2015 and 2020.

Two decades of that were played at the Estadio Mansiche, a municipal ground in Trujillo. Paolo Guerrero turned up there for six matches in 2024 and scored three times. Renzo Garcés lasted far longer — on loan from 2019, then signed outright, more than 120 appearances in orange and dark blue.

The new home is the Estadio César Acuña Peralta in the Huanchaco district of Trujillo, opened in April 2025.
