Cantolao came into Peruvian football from the wrong end: not as a first team looking for players, but as a school in La Punta taking boys from the age of four and working them through to under-20. Dante Mandriotti Castro set it up in 1981, and for most of the years that followed the club's reputation rested on who left rather than on what the senior side won.

Claudio Pizarro passed through it before Deportivo Pesquero, Alianza Lima and a career in Germany that made him the highest-scoring foreign player in Bundesliga history. Yoshimar Yotún made his debut here. Carlos Zambrano went through every youth category at the academy on his way to Schalke 04.

The senior team took until 2015 to come close to the top: a Copa Perú final lost to Defensor La Bocana, which sent Cantolao into the second tier instead of the first. There is still no title in the top division.

Home is the Estadio Miguel Grau in Callao, which holds 17,000. Sport Boys are the other Callao side, and meetings between them are billed as the clásico chalaco, though the deeper Callao derby belongs to Sport Boys and Atlético Chalaco, a rivalry that predates Cantolao by decades.
