Twice a year the Andes get their derby: Ayacucho FC against Sport Huancayo, the Clásico de los Andes , two highland cities in the Peruvian sierra.

On 9 August 2008 the Second Division side Olímpico Somos Perú was reconstituted, and under Edgar Ospina the new club finished second that same season, which was enough to go up.

The 2020 Torneo Clausura remains the only trophy, and it took the club into the Copa Libertadores for the first time. Two years later they went down to Liga 2. A court ruling put them back in the top flight in 2025; they were relegated again in the same season.

Home is the Estadio Eloy Molina Robles, in Huanta rather than in Ayacucho itself, and it holds 7,500. The white and orange kit is the more recognisable trademark.

Mauricio Montes, the Paraguayan forward, scored 45 goals in 103 matches and remains the club's leading scorer.

Nor has the club yet managed a top-flight campaign that did not end either in relegation or in a courtroom.
