It was a group of merchants who put their names to a club there. Unión Comercio won the Rioja provincial league in 2009 and again in 2010.

The 2010 season carried it the whole way. After taking the San Martín departmental title, Unión Comercio reached the final of the Copa Perú against Alianza Unicachi, won the first leg 2:0, lost the second 4:2, and went through on away goals.

The high point came in 2014, a fourth-place finish that earned a place in the 2015 Copa Sudamericana — the only time the club has played outside Peru. Relegation followed in 2019; a return in 2023 lasted two years before they went down again to Liga 2 in 2024.

Home is the Estadio Municipal Carlos Vidaurre García, 7,000 seats, shared with Unión Tarapoto — which is the sharper edge of the club's fixture list, two sides from the same city using the same pitch. There is no great weight of history in it yet, only proximity, and proximity has always been enough.

The nearest they came to a second trophy was the 2021 Copa Bicentenario, a semi-final lost 2:0 to Sporting Cristal, who went on to win it.
