About

Six clubs share the record for most titles in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana, each with two: Boca Juniors, Independiente, Lanús, Athletico Paranaense, LDU Quito and Independiente del Valle. No club has ever pulled clear.

The tournament sits directly below the Copa Libertadores in South America's continental pyramid — the arrangement is widely compared to that between the UEFA Europa League and the Champions League. It replaced the Copa Mercosur and the Copa Merconorte, and its first edition went to San Lorenzo, who beat Atlético Nacional.

The format has been rebuilt more than once. For its first fifteen years it was a straight knockout competition. A reform in 2017 brought in a group stage for Argentine and Brazilian clubs, lengthened the calendar and sent the holder into the Libertadores; in 2021 the group stage opened to the other associations through preliminary rounds. Fifty-six clubs now take part. Argentina and Brazil hold six direct places each, while the remaining eight associations enter four teams apiece into a preliminary knockout round that produces the other group qualifiers. Eight groups of four follow, the winners going straight to the Round of 16, the runners-up first facing the eight sides eliminated from the Libertadores group stage. Ties from that point are played over two legs; the final has been a single match at a neutral venue since 2019.

Winning it brings a place in the Recopa Sudamericana and in the following season's Libertadores group stage. Lanús are the holders, having beaten Atlético Mineiro in the 2025 final. Racing Club won in 2024.
