Olimpia

The Estadio Osvaldo Domínguez Dibb spent 2024 and 2025 as a building site: the old ground came down and a replacement is going up in its place, planned to grow from roughly 34,000 seats to as many as 46,000 once the later phases are finished. Until it reopens, Olimpia's biggest nights — the derbies, the continental cup rounds — go instead to the Estadio Defensores del Chaco, the national stadium in Asunción, which holds up to around 41,000.

The club dates to 25 July 1902, founded by a Dutchman, William Paats, who named it after the Greek city of Olympia. That makes Olimpia the oldest football club in Paraguay. They call themselves El Decano, the Dean, a nod to that seniority.

Nothing in the club's history matches 1979. Olimpia took the Paraguayan league, then beat Boca Juniors to the Copa Libertadores, then beat Malmö for the Intercontinental Cup, then added the Copa Interamericana on top — a quadruple no other Paraguayan side has managed before or since. The Libertadores came round again in 1990, against Barcelona of Guayaquil, followed that same year by the Supercopa Sudamericana and, in 1991, the Recopa. A third Libertadores followed in 2002, won on penalties against São Caetano of Brazil, in the year the club turned a hundred.

For all that, a Copa Paraguay claimed only once, in 2021, and four Libertadores finals lost along the way, are the gaps a trophy room this full still has left to fill.
