Club Sp. San Lorenzo

Cristian Riveros left this club for a national-team career that ran to 101 caps and two World Cups, 2006 and 2010, plus a runners-up medal at the 2011 Copa América.

The club these two left was not always called San Lorenzo. It started on 17 April 1930 as Tacuary Sport, founded in the house of Doña Félix Rolón; by November that year it had taken the name Sportivo Villa Cálcena, after Gregorio Cálcena, who had donated the land for the pitch. The Chaco War interrupted all of it. Reorganised afterwards, the club held an assembly on 24 November 1935 and adopted the name Sportivo San Lorenzo.

San Lorenzo has never won the Paraguayan top flight — a ninth-place finish in the 2020 Clausura is as high as it has gone there. Its record is built one tier down: seven titles in the Segunda División, in 1949, 1953, 1960, 1984, 1987, 1994 and 2014, plus two in the Tercera División, 2009 and 2017.

Home games are played at the Estadio Gunther Vogel, in the red-and-white striped shirts — the rayadita — with blue shorts and socks. The fixture that matters most is against Sportivo Luqueño, the Clásico Metropolitano, contested between two clubs based in Asunción's satellite cities rather than the capital itself.
