Nacional Asunción

In the 2014 Copa Libertadores final, a club that plays its home matches in front of 7,000 people at the Estadio Arsenio Erico came within one goal of South America's biggest prize. San Lorenzo held them 1-1 in Asunción, then won 1-0 in Buenos Aires.

The club was founded on 5 June 1904 by former pupils of the Colegio Nacional de la Capital, who borrowed both the name and the colours of Uruguay's Club Nacional de Football to stake a claim on the word "national" itself. The white shirt still traces back to the old school uniform; the dark maroon came later as the away colour. Internationally the club is listed as Nacional Asunción, to keep it apart from its Uruguayan namesake and the Colombian club that shares the title.

Nine Paraguayan league titles run from 1909 through to 2013. The most recent championships came in 2009, 2011 and 2013.

No name carries more weight at the club than Arsenio Erico, who broke into the first team at 15 in the 1930s before moving to Argentina's Independiente, where he finished as the record scorer in the history of the Argentine league. He turned down the chance to naturalise and play for Argentina ahead of the 1938 World Cup, choosing to stay tied to Paraguay instead — the stadium has carried his name ever since.

The fixture that matters most is against Cerro Portenño. Both clubs grew out of the same working-class district of Asunción, Barrio Obrero, and the derby still carries that name — Clásico del Barrio Obrero.
