On 14 May 1935, São Paulo's own board signed the club out of existence, merging it into Clube de Regatas Tietê and shutting down the football department. Members and supporters who refused to accept it broke away on 4 June that year and formed a new side, Clube Atlético São Paulo. On 16 December 1935 that club reclaimed the old name, São Paulo Futebol Clube, and the city still marks the date as Dia Tricolor.
The club traces its founding to 25 January 1930, when players and directors from Club Athletico Paulistano and the old Associação Atlética das Palmeiras came together to form it. The white, red and black shirt keeps both clubs alive: red for Paulistano, black for Palmeiras, white shared by them both.
Home is the Estádio do Morumbi, officially the Estádio Cícero Pompeu de Toledo, holding just over 72,000.
Between the sticks, Rogério Ceni turned goalkeeping into goalscoring.
