Serie A (Brazil) 2026/27

Campeonato Brasileiro Série A represents the apex of professional football in Brazil. Organised by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), it operates at Level 1 of the national pyramid. The competition distinguishes itself from the Copa do Brasil, which is a knockout cup involving clubs from all divisions, by functioning as a continuous league with promotion and relegation.

The modern structure traces its origins to 1971, when the CBD founded the Campeonato Nacional de Clubes. The CBF adopted the current name in 2003 to separate it from state championships. The format features 20 clubs playing a double round-robin schedule, resulting in 38 matches per team. There are no play-offs; the champion is determined by total points accumulated over the season. The bottom four teams are relegated to Série B, while the top four from that tier are promoted.

Palmeiras holds the record for most titles with 12, followed by Santos and Flamengo with 8 each. The 2024 champion is Botafogo, who secured their third title. Historical complexities exist, such as the 1987 season where the Supreme Court ruled Sport Recife as the sole champion, despite Flamengo winning the parallel Copa União.

The league provides a clear pathway between tiers, ensuring competitive integrity through automatic movement between the first and second divisions. The official website is cbf.com.br.
