Barracas Central sits in the Primera División after a climb that took 87 years, having last played in Argentina's top flight in 1934. The 2021 promotion came through the Torneo Reducido, a playoff for second place, settled on penalties against Quilmes after the two sides could not be separated at 0-0.

A truck driver named Felipe Campora founded the club on 5 April 1904 and became its first president. The name took a while to settle: it started as Barracas Central del Sud, switched to Villa Soldati when the club joined the Argentine Football Association in 1911, and only became Barracas Central in 1913.

Every honour before that 2021 title came from winning a lower division and using it as a ladder. In 1944, the club went through an entire Tercera División season without losing, 14 wins and 2 draws, and repeated the title in 1948. Decades later, Primera D wins in 1974 and 1981 pushed the club back up, and a 2009-2010 Primera C title returned it to the second tier after 60 years away.

Carlos Arce carried the club through most of that rise, playing 423 matches across the lower divisions before it reached the top flight. Among those who passed through as youngsters, Lucas Barrios stands out: he came through the academy between 1999 and 2002 before going on to become Colo-Colo's all-time top scorer and a title winner in Germany, Chile, China and Brazil.

Matches are played at the Estadio Claudio Fabián Tapia, where construction began in 1916 and where the club has stayed ever since, in front of 12,000 spectators wearing the club's red and white stripes.

The fixture that still carries weight in the neighbourhood is the Clásico barraqueño, against Club Sportivo Barracas. It dates to the 1910s, and its bitterest chapter came on 10 December 1932, when Sportivo Barracas won 5-1 in a match that decided the amateur-era title. The two clubs now sit in different tiers of Argentine football, which has left the rivalry running more on history than on the table.
