«La Lepra»
Independiente Rivadavia's oldest quarrel runs against Gimnasia y Esgrima, the two clubs sharing Mendoza and a derby long known as the Clásico mendocino. Godoy Cruz has pushed into that rivalry in recent seasons, and the same name now gets attached to both fixtures, with locals rarely agreeing on which one it actually belongs to.
The club formed on 24 January 1913 as Club Atlético Independiente. Six years later it absorbed Club Sportivo Rivadavia and took the combined name it still carries. The nickname that stuck, La Lepra, has nothing to do with the merger — it comes from a 1920s charity match played to raise money for a leprosy hospital.
Home games are played at Estadio Bautista Gargantini, opened in 1925 and known to supporters as La Catedral del Parque. The blue kit has been standard since the early 1920s, though the club occasionally brings out a white, red and green alternate shirt, a nod to the Italian roots of its founders.
No club has won more Liga Mendocina championships than Independiente Rivadavia, the region's oldest competition. Two Torneo Argentino A titles and a Primera Nacional championship in 2023 carried the club up through the divisions. In 2025, it beat Argentinos Juniors on penalties to lift the Copa Argentina — its first national title at the top level of Argentine football in 112 years.
