The club itself broke away from Club Universitario de Deportes in 1936 amid a falling-out, before students formalised the modern entity on 21 April 1937.

The old San Carlos stadium closed for a rebuild that ran close to three years and reopened in August 2025 as Claro Arena.

Sixteen Primera División titles sit in the club's history, four of them coming in successive years from 2016 to 2019, a run built under Ariel Holan and finished under Daniel Garnero, who added the 2021 championship. Further back, Carlos Bianchi took the 2000 title and is remembered as one of the sharper coaching appointments the club made. Juan Carlos Osorio came closer than anyone to the club's one gap: he took Católica to the Copa Libertadores semi-finals in 2011, but the trophy has never been won. A run to the 1993 Libertadores final, lost to São Paulo over two legs, remains the closest the club came.

On the pitch, few wore the shirt longer than Mario Lepe, who captained the side from 1982 to 2000 across 639 appearances, still the club record. Fernando Sampedri holds the scoring record with 119 goals.

The fixture against Colo-Colo, the Clásico Albo-Cruzado, draws the city's attention more than any other; the derby with Universidad de Chile runs a close second. The Copa Libertadores remains the trophy that has kept knocking on the door without coming through.
