About
The Copa Chile stands as the primary domestic cup competition in Chilean football, organized by the Asociación Nacional de Fútbol Profesional (ANFP). Founded in 1958 as part of reforms ahead of the 1962 FIFA World Cup, it occupies the second-highest position in the national pyramid, situated below the Primera División league but above the Supercopa de Chile. The tournament operates as an open-entry knockout competition, historically inviting clubs from all levels of the Chilean football system. This structure allows lower-division teams, including those from the Primera B and Segunda División Profesional, to face top-flight giants. While the format has varied significantly over time, recent editions have utilised a group stage followed by knockout rounds. The 2025 edition introduced a specific structure with 32 teams from the top two professional divisions divided into eight groups of four, with the top two advancing to a knockout phase.
The competition differs from the Primera División, which is a round-robin league determining the national champion and primary Copa Libertadores qualifiers, whereas the Copa Chile is a knockout tournament offering secondary continental qualification and the Supercopa spot. The winner qualifies for the Copa Sudamericana or the Copa Libertadores if the league winner also qualifies. Colo-Colo is the most successful club with 14 titles, followed by Universidad de Chile with six and Universidad Católica with four. Huachipato is the current holder, having won the 2025 edition. Notable historical reforms include the 'Copa Polla Gol' era between 1979 and 1985, where the winner earned bonus points in the league. The competition has undergone various name changes due to sponsors, such as Copa Digeder and Copa Coca-Cola Digeder. A precursor called the Campeonato de Apertura ran from 1933 to 1950 but is considered statistically separate from the current tournament.
