About

Segunda División

The Chilean Segunda División stands as the third tier of professional football in the country, sitting directly beneath the Primera B and above the Tercera División A. The league was established by the Asociación Nacional de Fútbol Profesional (ANFP) in 2011, marking a shift from semi-professional structures to a more unified national competition. This reorganization aimed to elevate the standard of play in the lower divisions by replacing the previous Tercera División A.

Unlike the fourth tier, which often splits into regional groups, the Segunda División typically operates with a single national table, although this format can vary slightly depending on the season. The primary function of the competition is to serve as a gateway to the second tier. The champion secures immediate promotion to the Primera B, while the runner-up or other high-placed teams may contest a promotion playoff known as the Liguilla. Teams finishing at the bottom face relegation to the Tercera División A.

Iberia remains the most successful club in the modern era of the league, having claimed three titles since its inception. Deportes Puerto Montt and San Marcos de Arica have each won the competition twice. In 2025, Deportes Puerto Montt secured the general table victory, earning promotion for the upcoming 2026 campaign. The competition does not maintain a separate official website; all fixtures, standings, and news are managed through the ANFP’s main portal.

While the term "Liga de Ascenso" is frequently used in media to refer to this division, it historically applied to the Primera B in earlier decades, leading to occasional confusion. The league's structure has evolved over time to balance competitiveness with travel logistics for the participating clubs.
