About

Primera División

The Primera División, currently branded as the Liga de Primera, stands as the premier professional football competition in Chile. Operated by the Asociación Nacional de Fútbol Profesional, it occupies Level 1 of the national pyramid, sitting directly above the Primera B. The league structure has evolved significantly over time. Since 2018, the season runs as a single, unified tournament spanning a calendar year, replacing the historical Apertura/Clausura split format.

This format dictates that the team finishing highest in the standings is crowned champion immediately, with no play-offs required to determine the winner. The competitive landscape involves sixteen clubs, though the current season features only eight listed participants: A. Italiano, Cobresal, Colo-Colo, Concepción, Coquimbo Unido, Deportes La Serena, and others. Coquimbo Unido entered the current campaign as the reigning champions after securing their first title in 2025.

The league’s primary distinction lies in its international qualification pathways, which operate separately from the Copa Chile. The Copa Chile remains a knockout tournament open to teams across all levels, whereas the Primera División is strictly for top-tier clubs. Success within the league provides direct access to continental competitions. The champion, runner-up, and third-placed team earn automatic spots in the Copa Libertadores. Meanwhile, teams finishing between fourth and seventh qualify for the Copa Sudamericana.

Relegation is straightforward, with the bottom two clubs dropping down to the Primera B. Promotion involves the Primera B champion gaining automatic entry, while a winner from the Liguilla de Promoción secures the second spot. This play-off involves four teams from the second tier. Historically, the competition has seen numerous name changes driven by sponsorship deals, evolving from Liga Banco Estado to Liga Scotiabank before adopting its current identity. Colo-Colo remains the most successful entity in the league's history with thirty-four titles.
