About

The Primera B de Chile sits as the second tier of the national football hierarchy, operating directly below the top flight and above the Segunda División Profesional. Organised by the Asociación Nacional de Fútbol Profesional (ANFP), the competition serves as a crucial pathway for clubs seeking elevation to the highest level of the sport in the country.

Established on December 28, 1951, the tournament began its inaugural season in 1952 under the designation Segunda División de Chile. It was founded by the Asociación de Clubes de Fútbol (ACF), which later formed the basis for the current professional structure. The league underwent a significant rename in 1996, adopting the title Primera B that it retains today.

The season structure centres on a double round-robin format. Each of the 16 participating teams plays every other side twice, resulting in 30 matches per club. Victory in the regular season guarantees automatic promotion to the Primera División. Teams finishing between second and eighth place advance to the Liguilla de Ascenso, a two-legged playoff designed to secure the second promotion spot. The team ending the campaign in the lowest position faces relegation to the third tier.

Deportes Temuco holds the record for the most titles won in the competition’s history, claiming victory five times. Current participants include Antofagasta, Cobreloa, Curicó Unido, Deportes Copiapó, Deportes Iquique, and Deportes Puerto Montt, alongside sides such as Rangers and Magallanes. The format remains focused on direct promotion through league performance and playoff success, distinguishing it from knockout cup competitions.
