Santiago Wanderers

Playa Ancha sits on a rise above Valparaíso, and everything about the ground answers to the port below it. Officially it carries the name Estadio Elías Figueroa Brander, after the defender who wore the club's shirt in the mid-1960s and returned to it in later years, but locals still call it by the hill it stands on. Built in 1931 and reopened on 25 December that year, it was gutted and rebuilt to FIFA standard between 2012 and 2014, reopening on 19 February 2014 with room for 20,575 people.

The club that plays there was founded on 15 August 1892 in the Barrio Puerto, and its founders picked the name Santiago specifically to set the side apart from Valparaíso Wanderers, a club that already existed in the same city. The green shirt came later and from an unlikely source: white kits with black "SW" initials gave way to a diagonal black stripe in 1907, then in 1908 an Irishman named James MacLean pushed the club toward the green of the Irish national team, and it stuck.

Wanderers first tried professional football in 1937 and dropped out again for lack of money. Between 1940 and 1943 they ran the table in Valparaíso's own professional league, winning it in 1941 and 1942, titles the Chilean federation spent decades not recognising as national honours; in 2022 the FFCH acknowledged them anyway, while the ANFP maintained they don't count toward the national record since a separate top division was running in parallel at the time. By 1944 the club had folded itself into that national structure for good.

Everton de Viña del Mar sits just along the coast, and the fixture between the two, the Clásico Porteño, is the oldest derby in Chile, its lines drawn by the mid-1930s along class as much as geography — Wanderers rooted in the dockworkers of the port, Everton in the better-off town next door. The three stars on the crest mark the league titles of 1958, 1968 and 2001, though some at the club still argue two more belong there for the unrecognised 1941 and 1942 championships. What Wanderers have never done is turn any of that into continental silverware.
