Deportes Puerto Montt

Deportes Puerto Montt came within reach of disappearing altogether in 2023. A debt of around 400 million pesos, combined with sponsors pulling out of the region's salmon industry, pushed the club to the brink, and it dropped into Chile's third tier that year. Two years on, in 2025, the club won the Segunda División Profesional and are on a good run right now, having returned to the Primera B for the 2026 season.

The club was founded on 6 May 1983 at the initiative of Rolando Molina, president of the Asociación Central de Fútbol, together with a local commission. Its name was settled at a meeting on 11 May that year, and the team played its first official match on 21 August 1983, keeping that name ever since. Deportes Puerto Montt reached Chile's top flight for the first time in 1996 and won its first title in 2002, the Primera B. Relegation to the third division followed in 2012; the club won that division in 2015 to return to the Primera B, before the 2023 crisis sent it back down again.

Home matches are played at the Estadio Regional de Chinquihue, also known as the Estadio Bicentenario de Chinquihue, which holds 10,000 spectators following renovation work carried out between 2009 and 2013. The team plays in white and green — a white shirt with green sleeves and green shorts — a combination that has earned it the nickname Albiverdes. Locally, it is better known as Los Delfines, the Dolphins, after the animal on its crest, and also as Los Salmoneros, a reference to the salmon-farming industry around the city.

Puerto Montt sits in Chile's Los Lagos region, and the club's principal rival is Provincial Osorno; their meetings are known as the Clásico del Sur. Goalkeeper Nelson Tapia, who was part of Chile's squad at the 1998 World Cup, played for the club in 2001. Uruguayan forward Sebastián Abreu finished as the Primera B's top scorer in 2017 while wearing the club's colours, and Chile international Cristián Caño played up front for the side between 2019 and 2020.
