Eduardo Vargas

The record still stands: six straight matches for Chile with a goal in each. He would go on to finish as top scorer at two consecutive Copa América tournaments, in 2015 and 2016, both of which Chile won, and added a runners-up medal at the 2017 Confederations Cup.

Vargas came through the academies of Inter de Renca and Deportes Puerto Montt before Cobreloa gave him his senior break in 2006. Three seasons there brought 54 appearances and 10 goals, enough to persuade Universidad de Chile to sign him in January 2010 for $700,000. He won back-to-back league titles, the Apertura and Clausura of 2011, and was named the best player in the Chilean league that year.

That form took him to Napoli in December 2011 for a fee of £17.9 million, but he never established himself in Naples and spent much of the following years out on loan, at Grêmio, Valencia and Queens Park Rangers. A move to Hoffenheim in 2015 was followed by three seasons in Mexico with Tigres UANL, where he scored 29 goals in 120 games. At Atlético Mineiro from 2020, he won the Brazilian league title and the Copa do Brasil in 2021.

In 2025 he moved to Nacional in Uruguay and won the league there too, before a spell at Audax Italiano and a return to Universidad de Chile. Across his time with the Chile national team he has won 120 caps and scored 45 goals.
