Provincial Ovalle

The name reaches further back than the concrete, to the Diaguita people who once populated the Limarí valley around Ovalle.

The team playing there now is not the one Ovalle grew up with. It was founded on 1 June 1942 as Club Deportivo Socos, an amateur side in the city's own league. In 2015, a group led by José Miguel Núñez, Simón Vargas and Cristian Venegas broke away and refashioned it as Provincial Ovalle, wanting a side rooted in the city itself. That same July, after flooding forced a match off its usual pitch, Provincial Ovalle won 6-0 and then 6-1 in successive games; a supporter told Venegas it looked like a cyclone had swept the field, and Ciclón del Limarí stuck as a second nickname.

Climbing the amateur ranks took the better part of a decade. The club won Tercera División B in 2016, then Tercera División A in 2023 with 27 points, winning 2-0 to reach professional football for the first time. In the Copa Chile, the furthest it has gone was the third phase in 2022, before Unión Española ended the run 6-0. Its first season in the Segunda División Profesional, in 2024, brought an eighth-place finish; in 2025 the side improved to fifth, with 36 points from 24 matches.
