Provincial Ovalle beat Colina 1:0 in the Relegation Group stage five of Chile's Segunda División on Monday night. The home side claimed three points despite playing with ten men for much of the second half. The result leaves Ovalle in fourteenth place while Colina remain eleventh.
The opening exchanges were cagey, with neither side willing to commit bodies forward. By then, the atmosphere suggested this would be decided by discipline as much as skill. L. Arce picked up a yellow card in the twenty-seventh minute, and L. Naranjo followed just before the break.
And here's the thing about sudden shifts in momentum: J. Soto's second booking and red card in the fifty-seventh minute changed everything. R. Tarifeno had given the home side the lead in the fifty-fifth, and Colina suddenly found themselves chasing the game. M. Munoz also went to the referee's book in the same minute.
Ovalle managed the game well after going ahead, though they lost N. A. Rivera Faundez to a red card in the eighty-eighth. The visitors made several changes, bringing on B. Cortes and C. Duma in the seventy-fifth, but could not find an equaliser. Tarifeno was eventually replaced in stoppage time.
Both sides registered ninety-two attacks and four shots on target, but the difference came in conversion. Possession was evenly split at forty-nine to fifty-one per cent, yet the home side took their single chance. Colina wasted seven shots wide of goal compared to Ovalle's five.
The victory moves Ovalle off the bottom of the relegation group, though they remain eighteen points behind leaders. Colina's result extends a difficult run, having lost three of their last five league matches. The two sides had met earlier this season, with Colina winning 2:1 in July.
