«Monsters of the Midway»
Soldier Field, rebuilt in 2003 to seat 62,500, is a long way from Decatur, Illinois. The team began there in 1919 as the Decatur Staleys.
The following year George Halas and Edward "Dutch" Sternaman took the franchise over. On 17 September 1920 it became a charter member of the American Professional Football Association, which later renamed itself the NFL. In 1921 the team moved to Chicago and played as the Chicago Staleys. It became the Bears in 1922.
The two sides have met 213 times since, and the Bears count the Packers as their fiercest opponent.
The club's nickname is "Monsters of the Midway", but the one fans use is "Da Bears". The 1985 team popularised it on the way to Super Bowl XX, where it beat the New England Patriots 46–10. Walter Payton was the club's running back in the years when he became the NFL's all-time rushing leader at retirement.
The Bears have retired 14 jersey numbers.
