Every meeting with the United States carries an edge that no other fixture on Canada's calendar matches.
The team lost its first international, 9–8 to Japan in Osaka on 31 January 1932, and the shape of Canadian rugby since has been defined less by silverware than by the players who carried it. Gareth Rees became the first Canadian inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame, built on 487 points across four World Cups, and James Pritchard later passed him as the all-time scorer with 607 points in 62 caps. Jamie Cudmore took a different route.
Canada's best spell came in the 1990s, when the Pacific Rim Championship was won three years running, in 1996, 1997 and 1998, and the 1991 World Cup brought a quarter-final finish that remains the country's highest. A Super Cup followed in 2005, beating Japan 15–10. The Churchill Cup final in 2010 ended in defeat to England Saxons, and Canada has appeared at every World Cup from 1987 through 2019, a run that stopped when qualification was missed for 2023.
Stephen Meehan took over as head coach in December 2024.
