In 1939 the Flying Fijians went to New Zealand and came home unbeaten. It set the terms for how Fiji would be watched ever since.
The Fiji Rugby Union had organised itself in 1913, first among European settlers before the native union joined two years later, and the national side took the field for the first time on 18 August 1924, beating Western Samoa 6–0 in Apia. Three quarter-final exits at the Rugby World Cup mark the ceiling the team has pushed against since — 1987 against France, 2007 against South Africa, 2023 against England.
Tonga and Samoa remain the fixtures that matter most at home, games spoken of as the Battle of the Islands rather than by any tournament name attached to them.
