Hobro

Football in Hobro grew out of a general sports society: the club that carries the town's name today began in 1913 as Hobro Idrætsforening, and took its present shape only at the end of the 1920s, after a merger with Hobro Boldklub. For most of the century that followed it stayed in the lower divisions, and in the mid-1970s it slid into the third tier during a spell when neither the results nor the finances held up.

The season that changed everything was 2013/14. Second place in the 1. Division carried the side into the Superliga for the first time. In March 2015, 6,596 spectators packed into the ground against AaB — still the record at a stadium built for 7,500.

Those matches with AaB from Aalborg, the North Jutland derby, remain the fixture that fills the DS Arena. Hobro have never won the Danish championship or the cup; the furthest they have gone in the latter was the last 32, back in 1961.

Thomas Thomasberg took the club back up in 2016/17, this time as winners of the 1. Division rather than runners-up. The second Superliga stay ended in 2019/20 with a last-place finish. Pål Alexander Kirkevold scored 43 goals in the professional era between 2015 and 2021.

The club sold striker Richmond Djamfi to AGF in 2024 for around €1.2m, a record fee for Hobro. Martin Thomsen, once the captain here, managed the team until the summer of 2025. Hobro play in the 1. Division, in yellow and dark blue, looking for a third way back to the top flight.
