About

The DBU Pokalen is the national knockout tournament for Danish football, operating alongside the professional league system rather than as a tier within it. It features a format that blends amateur and semi-professional clubs with top-tier professionals, creating a distinct dynamic compared to the exclusive Superliga. The competition is organized by the Danish Football Association and currently operates under the name Betano Pokalen after several previous sponsorship-related title changes.

The structure relies on a single-elimination system with staggered entry points for different levels of play. Lower-tier clubs from regional competitions enter in the early stages, while Superliga sides join the field later. All rounds except the semi-finals are played as single matches, with the final traditionally taking place at Parken Stadium. The semi-finals themselves are contested over two legs. This format allows for potential upsets, such as the historic victory by Vanløse IF over OB in the 1973–74 final.

Success in the tournament carries significant weight beyond domestic pride. The winner secures a place in the UEFA Europa League, providing a pathway to European competition. F.C. Copenhagen holds the record for the most victories with ten titles and retains the trophy permanently. AGF follows as the second-most successful club with nine titles. The competition currently includes approximately 104 teams from across the country, ranging from the highest professional divisions down to qualifiers from lower regional tiers. There is no promotion or relegation associated with participation in the cup, making European qualification the primary tangible reward for the victors. The event remains a standalone tournament separate from the league standings, offering a different route to prestige for clubs across all levels of Danish football.
