The Danish Superliga operates at the apex of the national football pyramid, featuring twelve clubs. The competition was established in 1991 by the Divisionsforeningen, replacing the previous first division structure. It differs from the Danish Cup, a knockout tournament, as the league champion qualifies for the UEFA Champions League. The season format includes a regular phase where teams play each other three times, followed by a split into two groups of six. Teams carry over their regular season points into the split phase. The top six compete for the championship, while the bottom six avoid relegation. The team finishing first in the Championship Group wins the title. The two lowest teams in the Relegation Group are relegated directly to the 1st Division. The tenth-placed team enters a playoff against the third-placed side from the second tier. European qualification is allocated primarily through league position: the champion enters the Champions League, while second and third places secure Europa League and Conference League spots respectively. FC Copenhagen holds the record for most titles, followed by Brøndby. AGF Aarhus won their first title in the 2025–26 season. The league has undergone structural changes, including a reform in 2019 that finalised the current twelve-team setup. Sponsorship names have varied, including the Alka Superliga.
