The A-Liga operates as the top-tier professional football competition for women in Denmark. Organized by the Danish Football Association (DBU), the league sits at Level 1 of the national pyramid. The structure differs from standard round-robin formats through its split-season design. After the regular season, known as the Grundspil, points carry over into two distinct groups. The top six teams enter the Championship Round to decide the national title and European qualification spots. The bottom four compete in a Relegation Round to avoid dropping down.
For the 2026/2027 season, the league expanded from eight to ten teams. This growth follows a decade where the number of clubs remained static. The competition feeds the second tier via a complex play-off system. The two lowest-ranked sides in the A-Liga face the top four teams from the B-Liga. These clubs play a double round-robin tournament, with the winners earning promotion to the premier division. The B-Liga itself contains eight teams, creating a specific pathway for movement between levels.
Fortuna Hjørring and Brøndby IF hold the record for the most titles, with twelve each. HB Køge has also established dominance recently, securing four consecutive championships between 2020–21 and 2023–24. The league determines the champion through accumulated points rather than knockout matches, distinguishing it from the Danish Women's Cup. The winner of the A-Liga qualifies for the UEFA Women's Champions League, entering the qualifying stage under the new 2025/26 format. While Denmark has no automatic berth into the League Phase, the competition remains the primary route for women's football development in the country.
